ISO 14001 Environmental Management System, one of the most widely used management standards of ISO, has been officially published as ISO 14001:2026 as of April 2026.
This new version has been released by ISO (International Organization for Standardization), replacing ISO 14001:2015 and aligning the environmental management approach with today’s sustainability expectations.
WHAT DOES ISO 14001:2026 BRING?
The main focus of the new version is not intention, but measurable environmental performance.
Key changes include:
• Climate change, biodiversity, and resource use are addressed more strongly
• The life cycle perspective has been clarified and made more demanding
• Risk and opportunity management has been restructured
• New requirements have been added for change management
• The supply chain now covers not only outsourced activities but all externally provided processes
In short:
ISO 14001 no longer means “we care about the environment”,
It means “we manage and prove our environmental impact”.
HOW BIG IS THE CHANGE?
The changes are not radical, but moderate.
If you already have an ISO 14001:2015 system, you will not establish a new system. What you need to do is simply revision and adaptation.
This is actually good news.
However, those who postpone it by saying “it’s easy anyway, there are no major changes” may face stress in 2 years.
